Below is a list of resources to help you improve your rescue group's public relations:
Books
Malcolm Gladwell
This remains one of the seminal books on marketing and how trends take off. I think this is a must read for every rescue group that wants to expand the marketability of rescue pets.
"The PR Crisis Bible"
Robin Cohn
Another must read for rescue groups. In my opinion, every rescue group needs a spare copy of this book on hand. I don't care if you get it at a used book sale at your local library or for mere pennies on half.com, please just get this book. NOW.
"The AP Stylebook"
This style guide comes in handy for writing press releases that reporters and editors will be most likely to pick up. Since I know that practically every rescue group is short on cash, I recommend checking out your local library or seeing if there is a spare copy at your local university or community college. Also, your local newspaper may have an older version floating around.
"Tongue Fu"
Sam Horn
Not exactly PR-related but necessary in the rescue line of work. Horn offers excellent tips for defusing verbal conflict, which can come in handy with angry potential adopters ("What do you mean I can't declaw your cats?") to those occasionally dismissive local municipal animal control workers.
A good dictionary
A good thesaurus (I'm still using the $7 paperback I purchased my freshman year of college).
Web sites
This is THE penultimate Web site for rescuers.
Pet Connection
Another excellent resource for animal lovers. Check out the
blog which
includes contributions from syndicated pet columnist Gina Spadafori.
Gladwell.com
Malcolm Gladwell, "The Tipping Point" author, has an excellent Web site, which includes his article showing just how close pit bull bans resemble racial profiling...and ultimately don't work.
Poynter
This is the Web site for the Poynter Institute, which promotes the advancement of journalism. An excellent site for learning what goes on in a newsroom and how to interact with journalists.
